(Before you begin reading, beware that I haven’t slept in quite a long time so this post might be a little . . . bewildering at times.)
Perhaps this is something every generation experiences and has been felt by generations before me for as long as history has been, but it seems to me as if the world is falling apart as of late.
My earliest realization of the terror this world contains at times is, of course, September 11, 2001, but things have not gotten better. Since then, the economy has been a major source of concern, my native country is involved in two wars that will seemingly never end, I’ve constantly got to deal with “green initiatives” (like tiny, ridiculous bottle caps on Poland Spring bottles, leading me to spill all over myself every time), riots and unrest in the Middle East (although, in my opinion, most of those were justifiable), and now people burning down their own city to “[show] police and rich people they could do whatever they wanted.”
As the riots in the UK are the most recent acts of stupidity, they are what I am focused on currently. Now, perhaps I am out of touch with my own generation or just humanity in general, but where does the right to protest permit people to ruin people’s livelihoods? I’m all for justified rebellion (which I’ve yet to see necessary in my lifetime), but looting and burning local shops, businesses and homes doesn’t seem logical to me in the least. What is the point trying to be made? These idiots are supposed to be sending a message to the government, so they do so by burning down their own communities. Are these people completely devoid of logic?
The only thing to ever make me angry is brazen stupidity. Nonsensical acts of violence fit the criteria of “utterly stupid” and all those morons running amok through their cities are no more citizens of the UK than I am. When you lash out at your fellow citizens and ruin the very livelihoods people have made for themselves, you are a pathetic excuse for a human being. It doesn’t matter whether they’re rich government cronies; there are better, more effective ways of dealing with them than lighting your city afire. No one is going to support you because of the actions you chose to commit in order to get your inane message out. However, had you decided to use your brain more than that of the average blade of grass, you could have very well found yourselves supported by the majority of decent fellow citizens.
I’ll conclude this equally nonsensical, sleep-deprived rant with a quote from one of my favorite movies: “Some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”
